We cannot thank Ed Baker enough for offering us this workshop in his bakery in Campshill Road to celebrate Real Bread Week.
When we arrived, we were offered hot sausage rolls (the best pastry ever) and there were three different flavours (the favourite with us was the one with fennel) and the Portuguese custard tarts known as Pastels de Nata. During the day he also made us the most scrumptious quiche with Wensleydale cheese and jalapeno peppers.
We didn’t just eat, we also each made a loaf of his famous rye sourdough with caraway seeds under his calm and careful tutelage. We were given strict instructions not to eat it straight away as we were told that it wouldn’t be properly ready until 24 hours later. My own loaf was eaten with smoked trout, cream cheese and dill in sandwiches on the way to Dorset and my husband commented that we had never eaten so well on a car journey. Ed’s recommendation was to eat it with goat’s cheese and I know that others followed this and were similarly delighted.
We also talked an awful lot, Ed telling us about his extremely interesting life as a marketing executive living in various places in the Middle East and us mainly raving about his food.
Please visit Ed to buy some of his delicious products if you haven’t been already. He is open on Fridays and Saturdays, but advises coming before 12 noon if you want the full range
