Walking around Kings Cross – June 2024

Our wonderful guides Jenny and Elaine took us to Kings Cross for this year’s London Walk.  It was a fascinating trip to this incredibly vibrant area much changed from yesteryear.   Gone are the days when the hinterland of Kings Cross was a seedy, dangerous area after dark – a no-go area if you were walking on your own.  Over the last decade the area has been transformed into a vibrant high-tech hub with Google, YouTube and Meta having their London offices located here. It can also boast of 2,000 new homes, 10 new parks (40%) of the land, 20 new streets, 400 mature trees, 23 new and refurbished buildings and a nature reserve. The area is best seen in the evening when the buildings are lit up and the bars and restaurants are busy and buzzy. However, despite all this modernity there are still remnants of the area’s industrial and carbon polluting past.  Jenny and Elaine gave us a fascinating insight into the area’s industrial past and present as well as its social history, exploring industrial sites as well as housing developments old and new.  The gardens were an added bonus with their lovely planting.  Given all the recent rain and grey skies, we were lucky to have warm and sunny evenings for our walks.

“A very interesting city walk.  I now have more places to visit again which is lovely.  I learnt a lot.”

“Lovely walk – really informative!”

“The weather was dry and the distance very manageable.  It could not have been better!”

“Another brilliant Lee WI walk!”

“A mind blowing superb tour of new Kings Cross with perfect guides, perfect weather and perfect company!”
