Visit to the Drapers’ Company

A group of Lee Green WI members visited the Drapers’ Hall on 3 March and were treated to a fascinating tour led by a wonderfully informative guide.  One of the wealthiest and most influential of the City of London livery companies, the Drapers’ Company can trace its roots back to the 13th century.  Originally functioning as a mutual protection society for those wishing to trade in woollen cloth in the City, today the Company’s main function is the administration of a number of charitable trusts – some of which have local connections to both Lewisham and Greenwich.  With the footprint of the building still largely the same as Thomas Cromwell’s house which originally stood on the site, we were able to gain a real insight into the history and work of the Company seeing the function rooms, artwork and silver vault where a particular highlight was the cutlery cabinet! Many thanks to June for organising such a great visit!
