A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by eighteen members who joined Carolyn to sample the delights of some sweet wines.
Carolyn showed us that there is a lot more to sweet wine beyond the port and sherry we are familiar with and demonstrated that there is a wide range of styles and that some sweet wines are indeed sweeter than others! We tasted examples of wines made from different grapes and made in different ways to produce delicious, unctuous wines such as Madeira, Monbazillac, Tokaj, Vin Doux Naturel and more. We also discovered what wines pair best with cheese, mince pies or Christmas pudding.
A good rule of thumb is that the wine must be sweeter than the pudding – if the pudding is sweeter than the sweet wine – then the wine falls flat and is overcome by the pudding. A good tip for finding a wine to add to the enjoyment of our puddings over the festive season!
Details of the wines we tasted can be found here: LEE GREEN WI SWEET WINES FOR CHRISTMAS
