Visit to the Migration Museum, September 2023

On Friday 29th September a group of us visited the Migrant Makers Market (now Taking Care of Business) exhibition at the Migration Museum in Lewisham. Following a short introductory talk and an ‘icebreaker’ led by a member of the museum team, we shared stories about our own names and discovered just how many migration stories there were within our own WI.  We then explored the exhibition which features the impact on our national and local high streets of businesses originally established by migrant entrepreneurs.  The exhibition features a wide range of businesses – everything from Marks & Spencer to Morley’s Chicken –  with each story reflecting the hard work, ingenuity and resilience of those involved.   If you haven’t heard of it, the Migration Museum explores how the movement of people to and from Britain across the ages has shaped who we are – as individuals, as communities, and as nations.   The exhibition runs until 23 December 2023 and you can find out opening times and more about the museum here: https://www.migrationmuseum.org.  A really thought provoking and interesting visit.
