Once again we took to the pavements, alleys and hidden corners of the City of London for one of our City walks with our guides Jenny and Elaine. This time we were exploring the secrets of the eastern corner of the City, beginning with the Monument and taking in a riverside walk to the old Billingsgate Market en route to the beautiful St Dunstan in the East Church Garden and the Church of St Margaret Pattens and on to Leadenhall Market. As ever, our guides had some great stories about the history of the sites we visited, one of the highlights being the beautiful and poignant sculpture The Gilt of Cain commemorating the bicentenary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. Jenny and Elaine alerted us to the connections and word plays made between the slave trade, sugar, the Biblical story of Cain and Abel and the financial trading language of the City.
We were lucky to escape both the rain and heatwaves with our choice of dates and Jenny and Elaine navigated us around the Thursday evening crowds and bar buzz with great skill! Big thank you to Jenny and Elaine!
