Mud, Mud Glorious Mud – June 2024

Putting theory into practice following on from our June meeting, a group of us spent a very happy afternoon mudlarking on the banks of the River Thames close to the Millennium Bridge.  After a brief introduction from our expert guide, Christine, we set off on a lovely sunny afternoon, kitted out in our welly boots and protective gloves to explore the riverbank, chatting and enjoying the background music wafting across from the south bank as we wandered along the foreshore.  With eyes peeled, it wasn’t long before we began to find some of London’s hidden treasure – pottery from all ages, clay pipes, bones and shells.  Top prize to the eagle-eyed Lucy Anne who spotted a button, now with the Museum of London for dating.  All our finds were examined by Christine and admired before being returned to the river to remain part of London’s historic waterside. Very many thanks to Jane Verity for organising such an excellent trip.
