A Wonderful Visit to Westwell Vineyard, September 2023

On a beautiful September morning we set off by coach for Westwell Vineyard in Kent.  Nestled below the Pilgrim’s Way, Westwell is a smaller vineyard than others we have visited but it is definitely one to watch.  We were treated to an excellent tour by Claire, who explained how the vineyard’s location made for some ideal growing conditions with the site nestled below the North Downs ridge and therefore protected from harsher weather conditions.  Growing on chalky flint soil, the vines looked at their best in the September sunshine and laden with fruit as Claire led us through the vineyard telling us about the establishment of the vineyard and the cultivation and care of the vines.  Growing Chardonnay, Ortega, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes, Westwell make still and sparkling style wines using traditional champagne and Pet Nat methods.  We then went back to the winery to hear more about the production of their wines before sitting down to taste some of the wines Claire had told us about during our tour.  The wines (and the labels) were excellent and many a purchase was made at the door!  An absolutely wonderful day – thank you so much for organising Carolyn!
