On 12th June a group of 14 visited Bethlem Hospital grounds in Beckenham as a follow up to our visit to the Museum of the Mind last year. We had a history walking tour around some of the buildings and grounds at the hospital and our guide was Terri supported by Colin, the Museum Director. We found it interesting to hear more about how the hospital works and the history of some of the services and buildings. We were particularly taken with the Chapel which although sparse in decoration was very peaceful and the Community Building with all the decoration on the outside. We were also lucky to catch the gardener at the right time and he allowed us into the patients vegetable and flower garden which was worth a look.
We also availed ourselves of lunch in the restaurant and then popped back for a cuppa after the tour. Those who hadn’t previously visited the museum did that before or after our history tour. All in all it was a lovely afternoon, the rain held off and we learnt a lot.
“A lovely trip today, and what a good lunch too! Even the weather was kind!”
