A visit to Lee Green Fire Station – September 2026

We visited Lee Green Fire Station on Saturday 5th September to learn more about fire safety and see behind the scenes.  We left feeling that we had a much better appreciation of how hard the firemen and women work and how difficult their job can be as well as a better understanding of how to prevent fires ourselves. (I think Selectric in Blackheath may have been inundated with women buying safer plugs on Saturday!)  It was also just really nice to see the inside of Lee Green Fire Station which many of us pass every day, although there was some disappointment about the lack of a pole! Ricky and his team were absolutely fantastic and gave us so much information in what turned out to be quite a short visit due to them being called to an emergency.  People commented that it was very inspiring to see their professionalism in action.

An intrepid group of our outdoor swimmers took to the water again in Beckenham Place Park on a lovely sunny and warm day.  We thoroughly enjoyed a refreshing dip in pleasantly warm water, swimming and chatting with friends – just how does Caroline swim and talk at the same time and manage to keep afloat?!… Continue reading

Tour of Modern Architecture on the Cator Estate – July 2026

Following her excellent talk to LGWI in June, local architect Ana Sutherland very kindly guided a group of 20 of us round some of the Blackheath Span estates featured in her talk.  The sunny Saturday morning weather showed off the local houses and communities at their best, and Ana was full of interesting facts and… Continue reading

Modern Architecture on the Cator Estate – Our June 2026 Meeting

For our June meeting we welcomed Ana Francisco Sutherland, architect and founder of Francisco Sutherland Architects based in Blackheath and Chair of the Blackheath Society. Ana became fascinated by the architectural history of Blackheath and the number of post-war buildings of architectural merit.  She soon discovered a network of collaborating practitioners living locally who had … Continue reading
