A visit to the College of Arms – October 2025

We spent a fabulous evening in the company of Dominic, the Chester Herald, our enthusiastic and engaging guide for our tour of the College of Arms.  We learned that the College, founded by Richard III, is the official heraldic authority for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and much of the Commonwealth including Australia and New Zealand.  As well as being responsible for the granting of new coats of arms, the College maintains registers of arms, pedigrees, genealogies, Royal Licences, changes of name, and flags. The heralds, besides having ceremonial duties, advise on all matters relating to the peerage and baronetage, precedence, honours and ceremonial as well as national and community symbols including flags.  Dominic then took us into the library where volumes are kept behind closed cupboard doors and access to the content is through a traditional card catalogue.  We were all enthralled by what we saw and heard – beautifully illustrated texts, some dating back to the 15th century setting out the Arms. A hidden gem in the centre of the City of London.

“An excellent trip with an engaging and enthusiastic guide.”

“A fascinating trip … my head is still full of pole cats, dragons and lions rampant.”

“Not to mention flamingos …”

“Great trip venturing into a historic and quirky place with fantastic records.”

Oh! We did love to be beside the seaside! Our WI trip to Brighton – September 2025

Our eagerly awaited day trip to Brighton finally arrived on 20th September and we had such a marvellous time!  After a week of very changeable weather forecasts, we were delighted that it (mainly) stayed dry for our trip.  An excited chatter in spite of the early start greeted Caroline and Alison as they signed everyone… Continue reading
