Ed (the) Baker – Our September 2025 Meeting

Local bread and pastry maker Ed Baker (sadly not his real name) came to talk to us about his fascinating journey from Lebanon to Lewisham, via many glamourous points along the way, and his transformation from city slicker to artisan baker, with the opening of his Ladywell bakery in 2022.  He gave us some wonderful tips about baking, described his produce in mouth-watering detail, and was so open and positive about the challenges he has faced along the way.  Ed also brought along two of his magnificent sourdough loaves – one was shared with almost biblical precision amongst the meeting, and the other was the much coveted first prize in our monthly raffle!  A wonderful evening!! Very many thanks to our very own baking team for providing an excellent spread of cakes for the evening.

“Thank you for arranging such an interesting interesting speaker!”

Details of Ed’s shop can be found here.

Yet another smashing visit to a vineyard organised by Carolyn!  On one of the few wet days this summer, we set off for Mousehall Distillery and Vineyard in East Sussex, a relative newcomer to the English wine scene, to sample some of their wines and gin.  We had an excellent afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed… Continue reading

A return to the Dabchicks – July 2025

Our intrepid band of wild swimmers returned to Beckenham Place Park on a warm and sunny day in July.  We were treated to a swim in warm water under a blue sky with dragonflies and coots to keep us company.  Yet again, a lovely outing with plenty of support and encouragement for the more nervous… Continue reading

Cows, Criminals and a Cake – London City Walks – June 2025

Our lovely guides Jenny and Elaine led us through the hidden alleys and little known backstreets of Farringdon on this year’s popular London walk.  Home to London’s oldest meat market and soon to be the location of the new Museum of London, we heard about prisons, goldsmiths and… Continue reading
