Blitz walk with local historian Paul Browning

On 10th May a group of 20 of us joined Paul Browning for a local walking tour to hear about how the area was affected by the Blitz. We found the remains of two painted signs directing local residents to the bomb shelters. We heard that the ice house in Manor House Gardens was used as a bomb shelter and was next to another which was in the hill on the grass field in the park. Paul pointed out the houses that had been built as in fills following bombs and those that were built in the fifties but to look like the existing housing. We learnt that few children were casualties of the Blitz as they had been evacuated but as children returned to London they too became casualties as in the lists of casualties in Taunton Road. Paul has been running through the area for many years and uses his runs to identify local spots to research. You can follow his findings on his blog Running Past.
