February Meeting – Ian Elmslie

Date: February 23, 2023
Time: 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Location: Trinity School, Taunton Road, SE12

Ian is a man of many talents: performer, musician, drama teacher, playwright and composer.  He says:  “If you could meet anyone, throughout the whole history of time, who would it be?  What would you like to ask or say to them? What impact and influence did they have on your life?  There are some that say that you should never meet your heroes…  Ian Elmslie did…and so many of them that he wrote a book!

“A Marvellous Party” is a collection of stories of a young man’s escape from 70’s suburban Surrey, surviving disapproval both at home and at school,  before finding his way towards the public and private life of which he had always dreamed, and being blessed with the opportunity to personally thank the heroes and heroines who led him there.   From Donny Osmond to David Bowie, from Tom Robinson to George Michael, from Liza Minnelli to Victoria Wood, from Lily Savage to Ian Mckellen, to name but a very few. The stories he tells in the book are not only ticklish tales of close encounters with celebrities, but also an observation of the up and down sides of fame, and how, in our most lost and lonely moments, someone  can unknowingly throw down a trail of breadcrumbs to guide us out the woods. You are all invited to join Ian and his cast of famous, not so famous, but always fabulous characters, and celebrate survival at what is sure to be “A Marvellous Party.”

Copies of Ian’s book will be available to buy on the night, cost £10.
