March meeting – Well Hall and the women who lived there – Lynne Dixon

Date: March 17, 2022
Time: 7:30 pm - 9:45 pm
Location: Trinity School, Taunton Road, SE12

Our speaker this month is Lynne Dixon, a geographer by background who slid seamlessly into an interest in history via teaching and family history. Her research on the women of the Well Hall Estate followed a project volunteering at the Greenwich Heritage Centre transcribing some WW1 love letters. Lynne’s now writing a book on an architect and builder, vicar’s wife Annabel Dott.

Women of Progress – Women of the Well Hall Estate in the Great War

The Well Hall Estate (now the Progress Estate) was built for workers of the Arsenal in 1915. The lives of some of the working class women in this nationally significant housing are glimpsed through the pages of The Pioneer Newspaper, in the diary of a fourteen year old girl and other records of the time.

FOODBANK: We’ve had a special request from our local food bank for breakfast cereals and UHT milk this month, so if you fancy bringing something along to swell supplies that would be marvellous and we will deliver everything to the collection point.
